Joe B. Medlin, formerly of Canton, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on Monday, May 17, 2010, with his family by his side. He was born October 24, 1931 in Taccoa, Georgia and moved to North Carolina at an early age. He was the son of late Grover and Eulala Medlin. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Henry and a sister-in-law, Gerry Mc Clure. Mr. Medlin graduated from Canton High School with the class of 1952, and held many fond memories of his class mates. He received his degree from Western Carolina in 1960. Joe retired from the United Way with 34 years of service in Greenville, SC, Wilmington, NC and Columbus, GA. He continued to keep in touch with his colleagues through an annual retirement retreat and Blue Ridge Conference. Joe never lost his sense of humor and was always ready to share a joke. He will be greatly missed by his many friends. Joe loved golf and was a member of the Hackers at Green Island Country Club. He also enjoyed his fishing trips and meeting his buddies for breakfast at Burger King. Most of all he loved coming home to his dog, Billie. Mr. Medlin is survived by his wife of 57 years, Almeda Medlin, of Columbus, GA.; his son and daughter-in law, Barry and Marie Medlin from Utah; his daughter and son-in-law, Babs and Jerry Newray from California; his sister, Mildred Gregory and a brother and sister-in-law, Bobby and Joan Medlin, a sister-in-law, Annie Medlin, all from Canton, North Carolina; and a brother, Winifred, from Japan. He had three grandchildren, Katrin Medlin, Bailey and Cartie Newray, a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Nita and Pete Howard from Marietta, GA; a brother-in-law, Buck McClure, from Canton, North Carolina. He was very close to many of his nieces and nephews all of whom were very much a part of his life. A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 21, 2010 at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens in Clyde. The Reverend James Parham will preside. The family would like to extend their gratitude to Hospice of Columbus, GA for their tender care. Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice in memory of Joe
