Maggie Valley-John Thomas Hyde, age 66, of Link Circle, died Saturday, August 30, 2003 at his residence.
He was a native of Macon County having lived most of his life in Swain and Haywood Counties. He was the son of the late W. P. and Nettie Cruse Hyde.
He was a US Air Force veteran. He retired from Southern Railroad where he had served as a dispatcher and depot agent. He was a member of the Bryson City Baptist Church and the Oconee Masonic Lodge #427 AF & AM. He had joined the masons while in the Air Force and stationed in Puerto Rico in the late 1950s, and then transferred his membership to the Oconee Lodge. He was a member of the Racking Horse Association. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and loved showing his walking horses. He had won numerous ribbons and trophies. He loved playing polo and had played polo with the Air Force team while stationed in Puerto Rico. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Ethel Patterson and Joyce Thomas.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Ann S. Hyde; one sister, Christine Thompson and her husband, Harold of Rutherfordton; one brother, William P. ''Bill'' Hyde and his wife, Shirley of Winston-Salem; two nieces and four nephews.
Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 3, 2003 at the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home. The Reverend Bobby Edwards and Mr. Bill Hyde will officiate. Burial will follow in the Bryson City Cemetery, with masonic graveside rites conducted by the Oconee Masonic Lodge #427 AF & AM. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, prior to the services, at the funeral home.
