Canton - John Elbert King, age 77, of 1 Woodruff Street, died Saturday, September 4, 2004 at his residence. He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and the son of the late Dexter Vernon and Artie Parham King. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Luke Aaron King and a sister, Jean Stamey. He retired from Champion International with 35 years of service where he worked in the Mobil Equipment Shop in the Maintenance Department. He was a member of Mountain Baptist Church and a former member and deacon of Long Branch Baptist Church. He was a United States Army Veteran of World War II. His favorite hobby was spending time with his grandchildren. In addition to his wife of 53 years, Margaret Worley King of Canton, he is survived by a daughter Tammy K. Powell and her husband, Jeffrey of Canton; three sons, Roger King and his wife, Rita, Denny King and his wife, Debbie and Tony King and his wife, K C, all of Canton; two brothers, Doyle King and his wife, Bobbie of Canton and James King and his wife, Zena of Oxford, NC; 12 grandchildren, Mark, Kerri, Nicole, Adam, Philip, Abigail, Samuel, Simon and Seth King and Jeff, David and Shay Powell. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Monday, September 6, 2004 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services with the Reverend Jack Scott officiating. Burial will follow at Beaverdam Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Haywood Regional Medical Center Hospice, Home Health Building, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28716.
