Lake Junaluska-John Buchanan McNair, age 87, of 334 Atkins Loop, died Saturday, November 15, 2003 at his residence.
He was born in Greenock, Scotland and came with his family to Brooklyn, New York when he was 10 years old. He was a Haywood County resident for 30 years moving here from New Jersey. He was the son of the late William John and Elizabeth Allan McNair. He was also preceded in death by a brother, William McNair.
He served for four years in the US Army as a tank commander and first sergeant during World War II. He was a teacher in New Jersey for 25 years. He was a member of Long's Chapel United Methodist Church.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Virginia Tyler McNair; two daughters, Virginia Allan McNair and her husband, Orfay Reyes of Waynesville and Dr. Anne McNair Bolin and her husband, Kurt of Weston, Connecticut; two sons, John Christie McNair and his wife, Laurie of Raleigh and Robert William McNair and his wife, Linda of Hartford, Connecticut; eight grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Hazel McNair, a nephew, Murray McNair and two nieces, Elizabeth Douglas and Jeanie McNair, and their families, all of Australia.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 18, 2003 at Long's Chapel United Methodist Church. The Reverend Robert E. Fuquay, Jr. and Reverend Woody Adams will officiate. The family will receive friends following the services, at the church.
