John Mcwhorter

September 4, 1926 — December 25, 2007

Lake Junaluska-Reverend Dr. John Lloyd McWhorter, age 81, died on Tuesday, December 25, 2007 at Givens Estate. A native of Waxhaw, NC, he was the son of the late Bartho Carl and Arlie Fincher McWhorter. A US Navy veteran of World War II and retired United Methodist minister, he held degrees from Duke University and a Doctor of Divinity Degree from High Point University. Dr. McWhorter's service to the church includes ministries in Asheville, Black Mountain and Charlotte (as founding pastor of Sharon Church), his last pastorate being First United Methodist Church, Gastonia. He has also served as District Superintendent of the Waynesville and Greensboro Districts, and as Executive Director, the Council for Higher Education. He is a Trustee Emeritus of Greensboro College and has served as a Trustee of Bennett and Brevard Colleges and High Point and Pfeiffer Universities. He has been a delegate to the General and Jurisdictional Conferences of the church and a member of the World Methodist Council. Dr. McWhorter is survived by his wife of 58 years, Sara Grubbs; his children, Fred McWhorter and wife, Tiffany; and granddaughters, Carson and Wallis of Wilmington, NC and Beth McWhorter and her husband, Tom Coward of Oshawa, Ontario, Canada. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 29, 2007 at First United Methodist Church of Waynesville with Reverend Dr. W. Lyn Sorrells, Bishop J. Lawrence McCleskey, and Bishop Thomas B. Stockton officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. Dr. McWhorter's body will lie in state at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville where friends may call prior to the service. He will also lie in state prior to the service at the church on Saturday morning. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of Waynesville Building Fund, P.O. Box 838, Waynesville, NC 28786 or Lake Junaluska Assembly, 689 North Lakeshore Drive, Lake Junaluska, NC 28745.
