Waynesville-John Montreville Queen, Jr., age 89, of 114 Highland Road, died Monday, June 30, 2003 at his residence.
A native and life-long resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late John Montreville Queen, Sr. and Grace Shook Queen. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Camden Hundley Queen, who died in 1989; two sisters, Mary Kathryn Queen and Martha Queen; and a brother, James Shook Queen. He was a graduate of Waynesville Township High School and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He was a life-long farmer and merchant; a former member of the NC Highway Patrol; past president of Haywood County Cooperative Fruit and Vegetable Association; past member of Board of Directors of First Union National Bank; owner and operator of Haywood Motor Inn for 32 years; and owner and founder of John Queen Farms. He was also a life-long member of First United Methodist Church of Waynesville.
He is survived by his wife, Bernice Clark Queen; four daughters, Margaret Rathbone, and her husband, Paul, of Waynesville, Mary Wilson, and her husband, William, of Knoxville, Tennessee, Alice Queen of Waynesville and Susan Carver, and her husband, Sammy, of Waynesville; two sons, John M. Queen, III and his wife, Pat, and James William ''Bill'' Queen and his wife, Joyce, both of Waynesville; his extended family, Sally Kroelinger, and her husband, Mike, of Tempe, Arizona; 12 grandchildren; 7 great-grandchildren; and 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren in his extended family.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 2, 2003 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Dan Lyons, and Reverend Miss Jenn Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 1, 2003 at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Don and M. R. ''Bud'' Whisenhunt, Perry Morrow, Frank Queen, Joe Sam Queen, Harry Robbins, Jim Clark, and Jim Coman.
