John Robbins

Maggie Valley – Lt. Col. John Clinton Robbins Jr., U.S. Army ret./82nd Airborne, passed away at his home on June 26, 2014 after 2 years of failing health. He was born May 17, 1933 and graduated from E. M. Holt School in 1951. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Army/82nd Airborne division at Fort Bragg earning the Master Parachutist Badge. His 20 years in the Army included tours of duty in Korea, Germany, Vietnam, and Panama. His awards included the Legion of Merit, Two Bronze Stars, The Joint Services Commendation Medal, and The Army Commendation Medal. He is preceded in death by his wife of 53 years Harriett Wilkes Robbins, his parents John Clinton and Lucille Shoffner Robbins, and his sister Pauline Lucille Craven of Denton. He is survived by his son Stephen R. Robbins and his wife, Gail, of Asheboro; brothers James Shoffner Robbins and wife, Marilyn, William Grover Robbins and wife, Carolyn; sisters, Della Ruth Carden, Jane R. Bowland, and Jean R. Watson and husband, David, all of Snow Camp; and many loving nieces and nephews. He is also survived by a beloved extended family in Maggie Valley and Haywood County whose love and kindness were a special blessing throughout his years in Maggie Valley, especially during his illness. J.C. and Harriett found a home and so many people they loved when they moved to Maggie Valley in 1987. They had only planned to come for a short visit but chose to spend the rest of their lives in Maggie. Throughout their many travels, Maggie was always the place they loved the most and the only place they wanted to call home. A memorial service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 5, 2014 followed by military rites at Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
