Beloved Father, Granddad, Brother and Friend
Waynesville, Joseph Turner Cathey, Jr., 78, passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, October 4, 2022, at his residence.
A lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Joseph Turner and Sarah Jane Walker Cathey. Joe was a 1952 graduate of Waynesville Township High School and Western Carolina College. His career was in the personnel department at Dayco in Waynesville. His second career was living off the land, gardening, hunting, fishing, canning his own food and generally leading a self-sufficient lifestyle. He enjoyed giving advice and guidance to many generations, young and old.
Joseph is survived by his daughter, Lenora (Lee) Cathey-Bell, of Dallas, Texas; son, Joseph Turner Cathey, III, and his wife, Tara Morgan Cathey, of Waynesville; his life partner, Lou Boyd Adcock; sister, Katy Cathey Bolton, and her husband, William (Bill) Bolton, III; two brothers, Clayton Mark Cathey, and his wife, Grace Ullrich Cathey, of Waynesville and Samuel (Sam) Richard Cathey, and his wife, Susan Jones Cathey, of Chattanooga, Tennessee; three grandsons, who will deeply miss their granddad, Walker Clark Bell, Leonard Clayton Bell; and Ashe Morgan Cathey; and the mother of his children, Mary Cathey Hawkins.
A celebration of life will be held from 1:00 until 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 15, 2022, at the Clayton Cathey Pond in Walnut Cove.
The care of Mr. Cathey has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
