Joseph Edwards

Joseph Francis Edwards, age 72, died on Thursday, November 18, 2010, at V.A. Medical Center. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late James and Mattie Gibson Edwards. He was also preceded in death by a sister, Edna Parker and three brothers, Lee, Harry, and Kenneth Edwards. Joseph was the commander of the 17th District VFW. He was involved with the VFW Christmas for Kids. Joe was a mason for 18 years with the Pigeon River Lodge #386 AF&AM. He was secretary and treasurer for 17 years with the Democratic Party. He danced with Southern Appalachian Cloggers and built homes and buildings all over Haywood County. He was a United States Army veteran serving with the 101st Airborne Division. He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Eva M. Edwards; two sons, Scottie Edwards and Terry Edwards and his wife, Jennifer, all of Canton; two daughters, Nancy "Libby" Nelson and her husband, Burgess and Tammie Beck and her husband, Eddie, all of Canton; three brothers, Roy Edwards and his wife, Edna, of Waynesville, Jack Edwards and his wife, Lucy and Frank Edwards and his wife, Marie, all of Brevard; seven grandchildren, David Nelson, Keith Beck, Kevin Nelson, Colten Edwards, Haley Edwards, Brian Diaz, and Gregory Harvey; and three great-grandchildren, Taylor Nelson, Dylan Greer, and Austin Greer. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 20, 2010, at Crestview Baptist Church with the Reverend Dan Page, Reverend Donnie Henson, and Reverend Dr. Roy Kilby officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 11:00 am until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Wells Funeral Home of Canton is in charge of arrangements.
