Joseph Collins Estes, age 89, went to be with his Lord and loving wife on Wednesday, December 12, 2007, at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. He was a native of Burke County and had lived in Haywood County most of his life. He was the son of the late Lank L. and Mattie Morris Estes. He was preceded in death by his wife, Lorena Sloan Mauney Estes who died in 2005 and two sisters, Letty Estes and Francis "Panky" Estes. He retired from Champion International with 41 years of services. Joe was a very active member of Canton Central United Methodist Church. He was born in Rutherford College and worked with several Boy Scout Troops of America in Burke and Haywood counties. He was known as "Daddy Joe". He was a United States Army veteran serving in World War II. Daddy Joe was a loving husband and father. He also loved to work in his garden and yard. He loved his church and spent many, many hours in voluntary service. He is survived by two sons, Tommy Pope and his wife, Kathy, of Canton and Joe C. Estes, Jr., of Charlotte; four grandchildren, Tony Pope and his wife, Amanda, Shane Pope and his wife, Roxanne, Tim Pope and his wife, Amber, and Matthew Farmer and his wife, Jennifer; three great-grandchildren, Michael, Tamara, and Chayse Pope. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 14, 2007, at Canton Central United Methodist Church with the Reverend David Christy officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church. Entombment will follow at the Horizon at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens.
