Waynesville, Joseph Stephen "Steve" King, age 52, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. Steve was born in Alamance County to Joseph Kermit and Marjorie Elizabeth Broadway King. He grew up in the Burlington area and graduated from Walter M. Williams High School. Following graduation he joined the United States Navy and proudly served for four years. Steve also served in the United States Air Force Reserves. While serving in the Navy he developed his interest in recycling. He attended UNC-Asheville and later obtained his master's degree in Environmental Science. He was a former employee of Wake County, Greensboro and Macon County in environmental services. He was currently the director of Haywood County Operations for Consolidated Waste Services. Steve loved adventure and had a goal to visit every national park. He loved hiking and any outdoor adventure. He loved to take pictures and spending time with his family. Steve was that person, that man, that God put here to be the dad, the husband and the brother that was truly admired and to show us how God would want us to live our lives. He was an active member of Long's Chapel United Methodist Church. Surviving in addition to his parents, Steve is survived by is wife, Charlotte Wilcox King. He was blessed to have a blended family and is survived by daughters, Jessica Sierra King and Lena Elizabeth Ware; sons, Joseph Stephen Hayden King, Eric Darley Ware, Skyler Scott Thomas Krafft and Joshua Dylan Krafft; one sister, Pam K. Purdy, and her husband, Reverend Jim Purdy, of Asheboro; one brother, Scott King, of Burlington; sister-in-law, Pamela Wilcox Smith, and her husband, Roger, of Waynesville; several nieces and nephews and a great-niece and nephew. A celebration of life service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 11, 2017 at Long's Chapel United Methodist Church with Reverend Christopher Westmoreland officiating. Military rites will also be presented. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday in the sanctuary of Long's Chapel United Methodist Church. Memorials may be made to the youth programs of Long's Chapel United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 459, Lake Junaluska, NC 28745.
