J. L. Mashburn, Jr.

Candler – Joseph Lee “J.L.” Mashburn, Jr., 88, passed away on Saturday, May 13, 2023, at his residence.

J. L. was a native of Buncombe County and a son of the late Joe and Ella Roberts Mashburn.  In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Faye Christopher and Phillip D. Mashburn.  J.L. was a 1952 graduate of Candler High School and was honored to publish several books regarding the people and the history of Hominy Valley and surrounding areas. Under his corporation, Colonial House, he established himself as a world-renowned collector and dealer of vintage postcards.  J. L., along with his wife, Emma, published several books to help others understand and appreciate the origin, beauty and value of antique postcards.  He retired from American Enka/BASF with 39 years of service and was a member of Enka Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Emma Sue Huskey Mashburn; two sons, Joseph Lee Mashburn, III and wife, Kim, of Erie, Colorado and David Brian Mashburn of Flat Rock; one sister, Catherine Mashburn Allen of Lebanon, Tennessee; five grandchildren, Jessica, Alex, Nick, Lizzy, and Jacob; and two great-granddaughters, Krystina and Jayda.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, 2023, at Enka Baptist Church with the Reverend Chris L. Reese officiating.  Burial will follow at Pisgah View Memorial Park.  The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.

The care of Mr. Mashburn has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Canton.
