Joseph Edward Massie, age 84, of Waynesville, died on Thursday, April 15th at St. Joseph Hospital after a long illness. He was a member of the pioneer Massie family of Haywood County and the son of the late James Edward Massie, prominent banker & civic leader of Waynesville, and Maude Cathey Massie. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps on the staff of General Douglas MacArthur. While stationed at Manila, he took part in operations at Leyte Gulf, in the Philippines, a four-day series of battles that was the largest naval engagement of the war. He was a former member of First Methodist Church of Waynesville, the Waynesville Rotary, and former owner & operator of several motion picture theaters. He is survived by two sons, Joseph Edward "Joey" Massie, Jr. and James Thomas "Jimmy" Massie (Joyce), all of Waynesville; a daughter, Cathey Massie Bailey (David) of Asheville; the mother of his children, Mary Smathers Massie; two sisters, Hazel Massie Choate of Tennessee and Eileen Massie Malloy of California; six grandchildren, Joseph Edward Massie, III, Patrick Eugene Massie (Erin), Jonathan Asbury Massie, Lisa Newman Francisco (George), Natalie Massie Clark (Jason), Mary Caitlin Massie; and two great-grandchildren, Tucker Brooks Massie and Anna Alisa Massie. Graveside services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Monday, April 19, 2010 at Green Hill Cemetery with Reverend Sanford L. Giles, Jr. officiating. Military Services will be conducted by VFW Post 5202 and American Legion Post 47. The family will receive friends from 11:00 until 11:45 a.m. prior to services at the funeral home.
