Waynesville-Joseph Max Burnette-78, of Sunny Drive died Monday, April 14, 2003 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home after an extended illness.
He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and was a son of the late Ellis Fulton and Terry Smathers Burnett. He retired from Champion International with 40 years of service as a foreman of pulp and chemical. He was a member of Riverside Baptist Church, Bethel Lions Club and the Combat Infantrymen's Association. He was a veteran of the United States Army having served in World War II.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ernestine M. Burnette, two daughters, Jean Henson and her husband Neal of Kingsport, TN, Karen Burnette and her husband Gary Miller of Fletcher, three sisters, Peggy Erwin of Canton, Laura Boone of Asheville and Mary Wright of Charlotte, two brothers, George Fulton Burnett and Howard Burnette, both of Canton and 3 grandchildren.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 16, 2003 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes. Burial will follow at Bethel Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice of Haywood County, Home Health Bldg., 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721.
