Joseph Putnam

Joseph Lewis "J. L." Putnam, age 70, of 320 Wilson Branch Road, died Monday, April 30, 2007, in Garden City, South Carolina. He was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and the son of the late Joseph and Cora Pressley Putnam. He was also preceded in death by two sisters, Hazel Shipman and Gladys Robinson; and four brothers, Ernest, Letch, Fred, and Earl Putnam. He was employed with A & P Tea Company for 25 years, and he also owned and operated IGA Food Store, Putnam Power Equipment, and Thickety Quick Shop & Deli. He was a member of Spring Hill Baptist Church but attended Bethel Baptist Church. J. L. loved big game hunting in Wyoming and enjoyed traveling. In addition to his wife of 50 years, Judy Blazer Putnam, he is survived by a daughter, Teresa Clark of Asheville; three sons, Trevor Putnam and his wife, Shannon, of Canton, Tim Putnam and his wife, Dawn, of Murrells Inlet, SC, and Tony Putnam and his wife, Jackie, of Spartanburg, SC; a sister, Reva Putnam Wiggins of Leicester; and nine grandchildren, Morgan, Meredith, Madison, Makenzie, Tonya, and Teisha Putnam, and Andrew, Hunter, and Christopher Geiss. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 4, 2007, at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Dr. Roy Kilby and Reverend Chris Willett officiating. Burial will follow at Long's Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 9:00 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at 320 Wilson Branch Road. Pallbearers will be Tony "Sonny" Cogburn, Woody Wiggins, David Young, Charlie Neal, Walter "Bird Dog" Taylor, and Gene Blazer. Honorary pallbearers will be members of his Sunday School Class at Bethel Baptist Church.
