Waynesville, Judy Jenkins McElroy "Mater", age 69, passed away on Saturday, February 18, 2017 at The Homestead. A lifelong resident of Haywood County she was the daughter of the late George Edward and Maybelle McClure Jenkins. She retired from Haywood Regional Medical Center. Judy will be remembered as the matriarch of her family, always organizing and planning family events. She enjoyed sports, especially softball which she herself played into her 40's and never missed a practice or game watching her girls play. Judy was a very caring and thoughtful person who put the needs of her family, friends, and even strangers above her own. Judy is survived by her husband of 51 years, Bruce McElroy; a daughter, Angela McElroy Stamey (Steven), of Waynesville; two sisters, Peggy Ledbetter, of Waynesville and Joyce Putnam (Robert), of Clyde; one brother, Michael Edward Jenkins, of Waynesville; one granddaughter, Casey Stamey Hooper (Brandon), of Canton; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 22, 2017 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Gary Putnam officiating. Burial will follow at Upper Crabtree Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service.
