Karene Evelyn Hutchison Bishop, 94, of Justice Ridge Road, Candler, passed away on Friday, September 5, 2014 at Pisgah Manor Skilled Nursing, where she had resided since December 2010, surrounded by family and loving staff. A native of Buncombe County, she was the daughter of the late Berver and Getrude Cole Hutchison.
Karene was a 1940 graduate of Asheville Normal & Teachers College, a lifetime member of Snow Hill United Methodist Church, Ladies Auxiliary of Navy Fleet Reserve Association - Unit 361, VFW 891 and served as Past-President of the Hominy Valley Extension Homemakers. She had volunteered with CarePartners, John F. Keever Solace Center for 12 years, served over 10,000 volunteer hours at the Charles George VA Medical Center and was a reading tutor at Candler Elementary from 1994-1998.
Her career as a teacher led her to serve 2 years in Mitchell County, 1 year at Candler HS, 1 year at Paris American Dependents School in France, 1 year in Auburn, AL and 24 years teaching First Grade at Sand Hill Primary, until her retirement in 1980.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Bishop and siblings, Montez Sandlin, Modine Margaret Hutchison and Frank Hutchison.
Karene is survived by her daughter, Diana Thompson and her husband Joseph C. "Neil"; granddaughters, Amy (Marc) Wallingford and Julie (Charles) Thompson Farrell and great granddaughters, Madison Elisabeth and Morgan Alexandra Corthell and Allison Paige Farrell.
A Graveside Service will be held at 3:00PM on Monday, September 8th at Snow Hill United Methodist Church Cemetery, Candler with the Revs. Carrol R. Lindsey and Dianne Johnston officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the Asheville Humane Society, 14 Forever Friend Lane, Asheville NC 28806; St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or Shriner's Hospital for Children - Boston, 2900 Rocky Point Drive, Tampa, FL 33607.
