Katherine Cooper

May 26, 1911 — June 24, 2008

Katherine Suttles Cooper, age 97, died Tuesday, June 24, 2008, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Spartanburg, SC, she was a daughter of the late Grover Cleveland and Minnie Foster Suttles. She was preceded in death by her husband, Marshall Grover Cooper, who died in 1999 and one brother, Grover Cleveland Suttles, Jr. Katherine came to Haywood County at the age of eighteen where she completed high school. She attended Davenport College in Lenoir and Weaver College in Weaverville where she majored in music. Katherine married Marshall G. Cooper in 1935, having met him at Epworth League. Katherine was a charter member of the Haywood County Rescue Squad Auxiliary, president of the PTA, Cub Scout den mother, member of the Haywood County Home Demonstration Club, community representative to the Heart Association. She was instrumental in founding the Cruso Community Center, was awarded Woman of the Year by the United Methodist Women. Katherine received honorary life membership in Women's Society of Christian Service and most recently she was honored with life membership in National Association of Retired Federal Employees. She is survived by two sons, Geoffrey Cooper and his wife, Sandra, of Cruso, NC and Stephen D. Cooper and his wife, Freda, of Arden, NC; three daughters, Patricia Edwards of Martinsville, VA, Katherine Llewellyn Ostergard and her husband, Bud, of Fresno, CA and Canton, NC and Zelda Ponder and her husband, Ray, of Clyde, NC; one sister, Nancy Robinson and her husband, Jim, of St. Cloud, FL; two sisters-in-law, Jane Suttles of Hendersonville, NC and Lojaun Cooper of Maggie Valley, NC; eight grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, June 29, 2008 at Cruso United Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. James C. Robinson and Reverend Gerald T. Denham officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
