Waynesville-Kathleen Cooper Rhinehart Spence, age 80, of Heritage Farm Road, Hickory, NC, died Friday, June 13, 2003 at Brian Center of Hickory.

She was a native of Haywood County and was the daughter of the late Charles Herman and Cuba Haiti Jones Rhinehart. She was also preceded in death by a brother, Charles Herman Rhinehart, Jr. and by two sisters, Naomi Rhinehart and Gaynell Abel.

She was a homemaker and was employed by Champion Paper and Fiber Company during WWII. She was a member of Hickory Gospel Hall.

She is survived by her husband of over 59 years, Walter H. Spence; one daughter, Rhea Hirsch of Bakersfield, California; two sons, Charles Harry Spence and his wife, Kathy of Lake Junaluska and Walter Spence, Jr. and his wife Shirley of Candler; a sister, Mary Ruth Mears of Arden; nine grandchildren; one great grandson; several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, 2003 at the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes. Mr. David Peterson and Mr. Fred Dancey, Jr. will officiate. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, prior to the services. At other times, the family will be at the home of Charles Harry and Kathy Spence.

The pallbearers will be Shawn Eplee, Judd Conrad, Steve and Paul Mears, Scott Watson and Jesse Howze.
