Kathryn Kirkpatrick

March 14, 1919 — May 19, 2012

Waynesville, Flora Kathryn Green Kirkpatrick passed away on May 19, 2012. She was a dearly loved retired school teacher who was born March 14, 1919 in Fines Creek to Farady Crawford Green and Georgia Belle Ferguson Green. Her sister was Margaret Green Carpenter, and she had two other sisters, Evelyn and Rachel, who died as infants. Her husband was Frank W. Kirkpatrick, also an educator from Fines Creek, and they were married January 18, 1941. He was a WWII veteran, who served in the Army in Europe during the war. They each served as teachers and administrators in several schools in Haywood County. Kathryn went to Carson Newman College when she was 15 years old and graduated from there when she was 19. She immediately returned to Haywood County to teach in Fines Creek and later at Crabtree. Kathryn received her Master's degree in Education and Math from Western Carolina University in 1955. She taught math at both Waynesville and Tuscola high schools and was named an Outstanding Teacher of the Year. She later worked at the school board as a supervisor and retired from teaching in 1980. She was a favorite teacher for many students and was often invited to class reunions and visited often by former students. Kathryn was a devoted member of First Baptist Church of Waynesville and taught faithfully as a Sunday-school teacher for children, served on the Finance Committee, and sang in the choir. Active in civic affairs, she served several terms on the NC Milk Commission. She enjoyed gardening, especially growing roses, and shared those roses often at church as arrangements or on the lapel of the ministers. She was accomplished in needlework and made many gifts of that talent as well. Kathryn was an avid reader. She is survived by a nephew, Mike Carpenter and his wife, Julia, and their children, Jennifer and James, and a niece, Tammy Carpenter Palmer, husband, Tim Frazier, and their daughters, Ryen and Wesley. Kathryn was extremely proud of them all and their many accomplishments. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 26, 2012 in the chapel of First Baptist Church of Waynesville with Reverend Dr. Robert Prince and Reverend Dr. Jack Bishop officiating. Burial will follow at Fines Creek Memorial Baptist Church Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Mike Carpenter, James Carpenter, Tim Frazier, Larry Ammons, Jack Ross, Charles Boyd and Jack Bishop III. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Friday May 25, 2012 at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. While flowers are welcome, those wishing to do so may contribute in Kathryn's honor to the "Haywood County Schools Foundation" at 1230 North Main Street, Waynesville, NC 28786.
