Kermit Wells

Kermit F. Wells
Canton-Kermit Francis Wells, age 80 of 49 Rhoda Street, died Tuesday, January 27, 2004 at the VA Medical Center in Asheville.

He was born in the Crabtree community of Haywood County and had resided in Canton most of his life. He was the son of the late Hubert E. and Winnie Mae Kinsland Wells. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Katherine Jackson. He was a graduate of Crabtree High School. He was a veteran of the United States Navy and attained the rank of 1st Class Petty Officer while serving during World War II. He also was the Fleet Feather Weight Boxing Champion. Following his military service, he enrolled at the University of Georgia and graduated from the School of Pharmacy at the University of Georgia. He briefly was employed as a pharmacist in Tennessee and for most of his professional career was the pharmacist at Midway Pharmacy. He was a member of Canton First Baptist Church where he was a deacon and Sunday school teacher of the Matthews Class and was also a member of the Canton Kiwanis Club.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Elva Bentley Wells, two daughters, Fran Carol Wells and Alta Wells both of Canton, three sons, Roger Wells and his wife Lois of Canton, Dennis Wells and his wife Diane of Mars Hill, and Dr. Kermit B. Wells of Canton, one brother, Reverend Keller Wells of Seffner, FL,
6 grandchildren, Madison, Lee, Stephanie, Jennie, and Samantha Wells and Joshua Lancaster.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 31, 2004 at First Baptist Church of Canton. Reverend Dr. Rick Gosnell will officiate. Burial will follow at Locust Field Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Buncombe County Veterans Council. The family will receive friends from 7:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. Friday, January 30, 2004 at Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services in Canton.

Memorials may be made to the music ministry of First Baptist Church of Canton, 74 Academy Street, Canton, NC 28716.
