On Friday morning, May 10, 2024, Kristine Johnson Hall passed away quite unexpectedly while working with chickens she enjoyed so much. While we were blessed with her presence for nearly 76 years, we know that she is now rejoicing in heaven.
A lifelong resident of Haywood County, Kristine was the daughter of Gaston Johnson, Jr. and Mamie Parton Johnson of Waynesville. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Charles Roy Hall, Sr. (2017) and her brother, Eddie Junior Johnson (1998). Kristine is survived by two sons, Charles Roy Hall, Jr of College Station, TX and David Preston Hall of St. George, Utah; a daughter, Patricia Hallstone of Piedmont, NC; three sisters: Shirley Cutshaw, Margaret Rhinehart, and Brenda Brookshire; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and Mary Hendrie and her partner, Cherie James, of Canton NC who are in many ways members of our family.
Mom was the epitome of strength, courage, and compassion. As a cancer survivor, she knew pain and conquered it. She shared her time, energy, and other resources to help those who needed it. She was our father’s caregiver for many years, and after his passing, she provided daily loving care for several high-maintenance geriatric dogs. They had become her family too. Mom’s entire life was spent taking care of someone or something.
Mom’s main hobbies included knitting and quilting. She particularly enjoyed being part of a circle of friends from Plains United Methodist Church that made prayer quilts, a LOT of prayer quilts. She volunteered at the North Hominy Community Center and peeled countless bushels of apples in preparation for their annual fundraising efforts. Mom was also an avid canning enthusiast, and while we don’t know the exact amount of world hunger she eased, folks who were the recipients of her generosity were delighted with her talents!
Mom and Dad always had a vegetable garden and grew strawberries. They raised Christmas trees commercially for a while and were owners of Blue Ridge Nursery. The nursery was a family enterprise that was a successful sideline business for nearly two decades.
Given mom’s sudden and unexpected passing, a celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, July 20, 2024, at the Hall homestead from 10:30 AM until Noon. Due to limited parking, please park at Plains United Methodist Church (2029 Newfound Rd, Canton, NC 28716) and a shuttle will run prior to the ceremony every 15 minutes to the Hall residence starting at 9:30 AM and after the ceremony from noon until 3:00 PM. There will be refreshments after the ceremony for those who would like to stay for informal fellowship celebrating Kristine’s life. Please RSVP at kristinehallservice.eventbrite.com.
Memorials in Kristine’s honor may be made to Haywood County Animal Shelter, 245 Hemlock Street, Waynesville, NC 28786 or Manna Food Bank, 627 Swannanoa River Road, Asheville, NC 28805..
The care of Mrs. Hall has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Canton and an online memorial register is available at "Obituaries" at www.wellsfuneralhome.com.
