Larry Halverson, 71, died unexpectedly on February 22, 2025. He is the son of the late James Halverson and Rita Halverson Corsi.
Larry was a conductor for the BNSF Railway, a career spanning 40 years in Southern California. He served as President of the United Transportation Union Local 811 for many years. Larry was honored to orchestrate an annual retirement dinner for railroaders each year. He retired in 2013.
Larry and his wife Linda moved to Waynesville, NC in 2014 where he loved the mountains, but more importantly, he loved the people. Larry never met a stranger. He spent the next 10 years serving them. He volunteered at Habitat for Humanity, as well as several ministries offered at Longs Chapel Methodist Church, his "second home". If someone came to him with a need, Larry was on it. His last day on this Earth was spent volunteering at Second Seasons Food Pantry, doing what gave him great joy, serving others.
Larry is survived by his loving wife Linda Halverson; Larry's children Sean, Tiffeny, David, his wife Melissa, three grandchildren and half-brother James Halverson. Along with Linda's children, Brooke, Sasha and Shaun, four grandchildren and mother-in-law Genie.
His laughter and big hugs will be greatly missed by all who were blessed to have known him.
A Celebration of Life will be held this summer at Longs Chapel Methodist Church.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Second Seasons Thrift Store and Neighborhood Pantry, 156 Boundary St. Waynesville, NC 28786.
The care of Mr. Halverson has been entrusted to Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
