Larry Wheeler, affectionately known as "Tater," was born on June 15, 1949, in Buncombe County, North Carolina. He left us on April 3, 2025, in Haywood County, North Carolina, after a courageous battle with Alzheimer's disease. A beloved figure in his community and among those who had the privilege of knowing him, Larry's life was characterized by his deep relationships, warmth, and vibrant spirit.
Larry dedicated many years to a career in sales, ranging from the automotive industry to real estate, where he built an extensive network of friendships and relationships. A graduate of Enka High School, Class of 1967, Larry was a man of integrity who worked hard and stood firm in his values.
In 1969, during the Vietnam War, Larry joined the Air Force, serving his country with honor and pride. Upon returning to civilian life, he continued to embody the spirit of camaraderie and laughter that defined his character. He was a wonderful storyteller, always eager to share memories and anecdotes that brought joy to those around him. His love for laughter was matched only by his exceptional culinary skills; his famous ham and asparagus rolls will be fondly remembered and missed by family and friends alike.
An avid outdoorsman, Larry cherished hunting, fishing, and camping at Shining Rock, reveling in all of Western North Carolina’s natural beauty. He encouraged others to embrace the great outdoors, sharing many adventures filled with joy and laughter.
Larry is survived by his daughter, Jade Crawford (Brandon), and his cherished grandchildren, Holden and Laney Crawford. He is also survived by his sisters, Frances Sprinkle and Margaret Carter, and his brother, Mike Wheeler (Gina). He leaves behind nephews Rick and Keith Sprinkle and niece Jan Robinson.
His parents, Ernest Wheeler and Edith Rogers Wheeler, along with Uncle Richard Sprinkle, nephew Mark Sprinkle, niece Amy Sprinkle, and his loyal fur babies, Rascal and Bayleigh, predeceased him.
