Maggie Valley, Larry Marshall Woody, age 67, of 275 Frank Mehaffey Road, passed away on Friday, October 14, 2011 at St. Joseph Hospital. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Arthur and Grace Finger Woody. He attended Hiwassee Junior College before serving two years in the US Army. Upon returning home, he completed his college education at Western Carolina University. He worked as a sanitarian for the Haywood County Health Department before going to work at Dayco, where he worked as a foreman in the Shipping Department until the plants closure. For the next twelve years, until his retirement in May of this year, he was employed as a criminal magistrate in Haywood County's Administrative Office of the Court. Larry's great love was the mountains where he grew up. He spent a great deal of his time riding his horse on the back trails exploring the beautiful country—sometimes by himself and sometimes with his riding buddies. Larry was a wonderful, loving husband, had a keen sense of humor, valued his friends, and was always available if anyone needed his help. He was a member of Peachtree United Methodist Church and had a strong religious faith that gave him strength throughout his illness. His will to live was strong, and he accepted his fate with dignity. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Barbara Fie Woody; one brother, Mike Woody, of Maggie Valley; and a sister, Judy Woody Patterson, also of Maggie Valley; aunts and uncles, Lee Finger and his wife, Susan, Jack Finger and his wife, Olin, Frances Smith and her husband, Dr. Heyward Smith, Hattie McCall, and Mary Greer; nephews, Shannon Woody, Daniel Scott Patterson, Robert Melton Patterson, Jr. and his wife, Melissa, Patrick Clark Patterson and his wife, Josie; and numerous cousins. Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Tim McConnell and Reverend Richard Buff officiating. Entombment will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park Mausoleum. Serving as pallbearers will be Eddie West, Terry Wilson, Tim Carver, Don Carpenter, Mark Mease, Bobby Suttles, Carroll Mehaffey, and Jack Lewis. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. prior to services at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Peachtree United Methodist Church, 307 Black Camp Gap Road, Maggie Valley, NC 28751.
