Lawrence Leon

August 10, 1916 — December 20, 2005

Waynesville-Lawrence Louis "Larry" Leon, age 89, of 501 Nancy Lance, passed away on Tuesday, December 20, 2005 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Tamaqua, PA, he was the son of Michael and Anna Lynch Leon. He received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from Kutztown University. He was a retired Lieutenant Colonial of the US Air Force serving as a career intelligence officer. He was a veteran of World War II where he served in the Pacific Theater and flew with the 91st Reconnaissance Wing. He later served during the Korean Conflict and also served as a member of the 7th Air Force in Vietnam. His career took him to Vietnam, Japan, England, and all over the world. He was Director of Instruction of Chinese at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and was very active in the Lions Club and was a member of First United Methodist Church of Waynesville. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Anna Leon; a daughter, Patricia A. Long and her husband, Brian, of Springfield, VA; and two grandchildren, Sarah E. and Adrienne Long, also of Springfield, VA. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 23, 2005 at First United Methodist Church of Waynesville with Reverend Dr. Lyn Sorrells officiating. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery in Washington, DC. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. on Friday prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be made to the John Christy Benevolence Fund, c/o First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 838, Waynesville, NC 28786. Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville, NC is in charge of arrangements.
