Lawrence Waldroup "In Loving Memory" Canton- Lawrence Junior Waldroup, age 89, passed away on Thursday, November 20, 2014 at The Homestead. A native of Swain County and a resident of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Sally Messer Waldroup. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Reva H. Waldroup; a brother, Robert Waldroup; two sister, Norma Mae Meadows and Leatha Haney; and a grandson, Anthony Shane Gaddis. A US Navy veteran of WWII, he was stationed on the USS Santee during the attack on Pearl Harbor. He was a member of the Order of the Golden Dragons and also served many years in the US Naval Reserves. Lawrence retired from the American Enka Corporation and was a member of Long's United Methodist Church. He was a man of many talents, including a love of bluegrass gospel music where he played bass for Hill Country and Way Side Bands. He enjoyed woodworking, horseback riding, flying airplanes, and on many occasions he could be found riding his Harley motorcycle. He is survived by a daughter, Deborah Gaddis and her husband, Robert, of Anderson, SC; a grandson, Shawn Gaddis; two great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Anthony Shane Gaddis; special nieces, Linda (Pressley) Barnham and her husband, Gary, and Robin Ann Howell and her husband, Kirby; and special friend, Lorean Wood. A graveside service with military honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, November 24, 2014 at Long's Community Cemetery with Reverend Matt Pruett officiating.
