Lela Singleton

January 2, 1928 — May 5, 2014

Canton, Lela Mae Burnette Singleton, age 86, of the Bethel community, passed away on Monday, May 5, 2014 at her residence. A native and lifelong resident of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Glenlowe and Lula Mae Chambers Burnette. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Seymour Gary Singleton, who died in 1989; a sister, Barbara Kuykendall; and one brother, Roy Lanning. She was employed by the American Enka Corporation for 13 years and was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Lela was a special lady who was devoted to her family and placed them first in her life. She always took the time to listen to her children and support them in their endeavors. She will be remembered as a very patient, loving, kind and selfless wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend. Lela is survived by one son, Gary Glenlowe Singleton, of Asheville; three daughters, Mary Sue Singleton of Waynesville, Keitha Ann Cloudt and her husband, Wayne, of Big Island, Virginia and Karen Stamey and her husband, Marty, of Canton; two brothers, Blanton Burnette and his wife, Fannie, of Canton and Lawrence Lanning and his wife, Judy, of Canton; five grandchildren, Anna Laura Hopper and husband, David, Jennifer Cloudt, Kristen Mitchell and husband, Luke, Wes Stamey and wife, Samantha, and Walker Stamey; four great-grandchildren, Ezra, Ava, Ari, and Uriah Hopper; as well as several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 8, 2014 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Heath Davis officiating. Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. on Friday at Bethel Community Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 4:30 until 6:30 p.m. on Thursday prior to services at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 120 Executive Park, Building One, Asheville, NC 28801.
