Maggie Valley-Leonard Samuel Farmer, age 78, of Johnson Branch Road, died Tuesday, May 18, 2004 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. He was the son of the late Dewey and Christine Sisk Farmer and was the husband of the late Hazel Burris Farmer who died in 1996. He was also preceded in death by his 1st. wife, Clara Garnes Farmer and a daughter, Marilyn Farmer. He retired from Champion International with 41 years of service and was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church. He was a United States Navy Veteran serving in the Asiatic-Pacific Area, the Philippine Liberation and the European-African Area with combat duty on the USS LST 530 and the USS LST 814. He is survived by two daughters, Teresa McGaha and her husband, Tony of Maggie Valley and Cheryl Liner and her husband "Red" of Canton, one step-son, Ronald Devlin and his wife Sharon of Tennessee, three sisters, Tulon Berry of Hollywood, FL, Irene Murr and her husband Reuben of Rock Hill, SC and Vera Mellican of Los Angeles, CA, one brother, Richard Farmer and his wife Eleen of Canton and 10 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 4:00 p.m. Friday, May 21, 2004 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services. Reverend James Burress and Reverend Perry Brindley will officiate. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens in Clyde. The family will receive friends from 2:30 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home prior to the service. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetic Association, 1820 E. 7th Street, Charlotte, NC 28204.
