Leonard Leatherwood

Lake Junaluska-Leonard L. Leatherwood, age 88, of 175 Atkins Loop, died on Sunday, December 17, 2006 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Charles and Myrtle Dotson Leatherwood and was also preceded in death by an infant brother and a brother, Lawrence B. Leatherwood. He was a US Army Veteran of World War II, having served in the 1st Armored Division in North Africa and Italy. He was employed in the Maintenance Department of Champion International for 35 years, retiring in 1980. He was a member of Maple Grove United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the choir for 55 years, Chairman of Trustees for 16 years, and a member of the Good Timers. He was also a member of the Junaluskans and enjoyed woodworking. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Hilda Moody Leatherwood; two sons, Terry L. Leatherwood and his wife, Eileen, of Waynesville and Alan Leatherwood and his wife, Darlene, of O'Fallon, IL; three grandchildren, Dedra Thomas, of Atlanta, Jennifer Leatherwood Glasglow and her husband, Dr. Sean Glasgow, of St. Louis, MO and Captain Jonathan Leatherwood and his wife, Crystal, of Valdosta, GA; and two great grandchildren, Douglas and Megan Glasgow. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, December 20, 2006 at Maple Grove United Methodist Church with Reverend Mike Shuford and Reverend Tom Hunter officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m. on Tuesday evening at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville. Serving as pallbearers will be Charles Cook, Lynn and James Noland, Bob Hunziker, Wesley Queen, and Jonathan and Larry Leatherwood. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Maple Grove United Methodist Church, 79 Maple Grove Church Road, Waynesville, NC 28786.
