Leonard Smith

December 26, 1929 — September 5, 2008

Waynesville, Leonard Howard Smith, age 78, died Friday, September 5, 2008 at Autumn Care of Waynesville. He was a native of Haywood County. He was the son of the late Henry and Mollie Rogers Smith. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Wayne, Vaughn and William Troy Smith and a sister, Barbara Carver. Leonard retired from Filtro Company in 1991 after 29 years at which time, he returned to Haywood County. He was member of Woodland Baptist Church and loved the outdoors and gardening. He served in the U.S. Navy and then the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict obtaining the rank of Sergeant and was awarded the Purple Heart. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Kathleen Palmer Smith; a step-daughter, Wanda Snyder and her husband, Jack of Stockton, CA; two step-sons, Lowell Buchanan and his wife, Ellen of Jacksonville, FL and Charles Buchanan and his wife, Pam of Johnstown PA; two sisters, Mildred Beecher of Spokane, WA and Mary Ann Waldroup and her husband, Joe of High Point, NC; two brothers, Donald Smith and his wife, Frances of Cruso and Mack Smith and his wife, Sue of Waynesville and two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 8, 2008 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Alan Davis and Reverend Glenn Rogers officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Serving as pallbearers will be Donnie, Tyler, Jerimiah, Michael, Dale and Ashley Smith. Memorials may be made to Woodland Baptist Church-Building Fund, P.O. Box 127, Clyde, NC 28721.
