Canton-Leonard John Snyder, age 85, died Sunday March 7, 2004 at his residence.
He was a native of Union County, SC and had lived in Haywood County for the past 20 years. He had previously resided in Kalamazoo, MI, Hendersonville, NC and spent his winters in Florida. He was the son of the late Robert and Addie Turner Snyder. He was also preceded in death by 5 brothers; J. B. , Homer, Charlie, Carl and Hillard Snyder and one sister, Pearl Thompson. Mr. Snyder was a pressman in the paper industry in Kalamazoo, MI for a number of years until his retirement. He was former owner of Southernaire Motel in Hendersonville. He was a member of the D.A.V in Haywood County, an accomplished self-taught musician on the Mandolin, Guitar and Banjo, playing in a number of bluegrass bands. Mr. Snyder was of the protestant faith. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in World War II. He received the good conduct medal, American defense medal and American theater medal.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Violet Henson Snyder and one sister, Nellie Medford of Canton.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, 2004 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services. Reverend Jerry Ensley will officiate. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens with military graveside honors. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at 40 Cooper Street, Canton, NC 28716. Serving as pallbearers will be Chip Henson, Greg Blythe, Rob Tyler, Butch Henson, James Snyder and Tracy Henson.
Flowers would be appreciated or memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice.
