Waynesville, Lester Messer, 87, passed away on December 14, 2017 at Smokey Mountain Health and Rehabilitation Center.
A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Glenn and Burr Leatherwood Messer. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three sisters, Ethel Ray, Elizabeth Grasty, and Ella Sue Davison; and two brothers, Audry and Ernest Messer. Lester was a retired employee of NC Department of Corrections and retired tobacco farmer. He was a long term member of Hemphill Baptist Church serving as both deacon and Men's Sunday school teacher.
Lester is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruby Caldwell Messer; three sons, Danny Messer and wife, Carolyn, Benny Messer and wife, Keva, both of Waynesville and Kenny Messer, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; and one sister, Elease Messer, of Waynesville; and four grandchildren, Travis and Brentley Messer, Amanda Butler and Amy Morgan.
Travis Messer, Brentley Messer, J.D. Morgan, Jeremy Morgan, Dwight Caldwell, Arthur Evans,
Jerry Smith, Brian Myers, Dakota Payne, and Billy Ferguson will serve as pallbearers.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Sunday, December 17, 2017 in the Waynesville chapel of Wells Funeral with Reverend Jake Cagle and Reverend Mark Caldwell officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. Visitation will precede the funeral at 1:00 pm at Wells Funeral Home. Musical inspiration provided by the Allen family singers.
