Canton - Lester L. Ward, age 88, died Thursday, July 5, 2007, at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. He was a native of Henderson County and the son of the late Lynn and Inez Case Ward. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Linda "Tootsie" Ward; two sisters, Irene Keener and Lucille Milner and a brother, J. C. Ward. He retired from Champion International with 40 years of service. Lester was an avid golfer. From 1955 - 1980, Lester served as a Clyde Alderman, a Sunday School teacher at Clyde Central United Methodist Church for 30 years, and served in various offices at Morning Star United Methodist Church for 24 years where he was an active member. He was an active leader with the Boy Scouts, serving as an assistant Scoutmaster for six years, explorer advisor for three years, as well as Methodist Youth Fellowship counselor for six years. He was a United States Navy veteran serving during World War II as an aviation radioman. In addition to his wife of 24 years, Mary Robinson Ward, he is survived by a son Ron Ward of Atlanta, GA; two step-children, Pat Ruth of Florence, SC, and Ron Sorrels and his wife, Joan, of Arden; a sister, Mabel Wilson and her husband, J. B., of Canton; a brother, Guy Ward of Canton; two grandchildren, Brandon Ward and Courtney Haygood; and three step-grandchildren, Christy and Heather Sorrels, and Garret Ruth. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 8, 2007 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend Doug Love officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
