Canton - Lewis Leonard Drye, age 84, of Morning Star Road died Tuesday, July 19, 2005 at Haywood Regional Medical Center. He was a native of Stanley County and had resided in Haywood County for 57 years. He was the son of the late C. P. and Kittie Ida Bella Brooks Drye. Lewis was one of 12 brothers and sisters. He retired from Champion International with 30 years of service as a senior office clerk in the store room. He was a member of Morning Star United Methodist Church where he served as Director of Morning Star Cemetery Association and Chairman of the Board of Directors. He loved the outdoors and was a land developer. Mr. Drye was a United States Army veteran of World War II stationed in the Persian Gulf. In addition to his wife of 57 years, Edna Smathers Drye, he is survived by a son, Steve Cox and his wife, Sue of Canton; two sisters, Auta Drye of Fairfax, VA and Juette Drye Brooks of Marshville, NC; three grandchildren, Stephanie Wright and Mitchell and Nathan Cox and seven great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, July 22, 2005 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services with the Reverend Doug Love officiating. Burial will follow at Morning Star Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 12:00 - 2:00 p.m. prior to the services at the funeral home.
