Libbie Allen Stines
"Beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother, and Friend"

Canton - At this season of Thanksgiving, we give thanks for the life of a very beloved lady, Libbie Lou Allen Stines. Libbie, age 86, passed away in the early morning hours of Saturday, November 25, 2017 at her residence following a period of declining health.

Libbie grew up in De Land, Florida and was a graduate of De Land High School. She then enrolled at Wake Forest College from which she graduated in 1953. While attending Wake Forest College, she was active in student government, women's government, and was a member of Mortar Board. The most significant event that occurred while attending Wake Forest College was meeting the love of her life Ernest H. Stines. Ernie and Libbie were married in 1952 while Ernie was serving in the U.S. Coast Guard. Following his military service, they moved to Winston-Salem, NC for Ernie to enroll in medical school at Bowman Gray Medical School. While residing in Winston-Salem, Libbie taught at Gray High School. In 1959, Libbie and Dr. Stines moved to Canton where her husband became a co-founder of Midway Medical Center.

In becoming a resident of Canton, Libbie became active in many endeavors. She was always active in local PTAs while her three children were in school. She was a member of Haywood County Medical Auxiliary and the Ladies Auxiliary of the Norfolk-Southern Medical Association. Libbie had a cherished love for her church. She was an active member of Canton First Baptist Church, serving as church clerk and on numerous other committees. She also taught several different Sunday School classes and was active in WMU. Libbie also went on several mission projects through her church.

Libbie's father, "Pug" Allen, was a beloved golf pro which naturally translated to Libbie being an avid golfer throughout her life. She enjoyed many times of fellowship as a member of the Waynesville Ladies Golf Association and later the Springdale Ladies Golf Association. As their children became active in Pisgah High School athletics, Libbie and Ernie became solid PHS fans. Long after their children graduated from Pisgah, Libbie with Ernie by her side, could be seen at practically every sporting event supporting Pisgah High School.

Libbie is survived by her devoted husband of 65 years, Dr. Ernest H. Stines; two sons, Chuck Stines and his wife, Mona, of Mableton, Georgia and Bill Stines and his wife, Jill, of Columbus, Ohio; one daughter, Mary Lib Ladner and her husband, James, of Black Mountain; one sister, Eleanor Wilbanks of De Land, Florida; one brother-in-law, James Stines and his wife, Joyce, of Blowing Rock; four grandchildren, Tanner Stines and his wife, Megan, Zachary Stines and his wife, Lindy, Will Stines, and Nicole Stines; and several nieces and nephews.

A service celebrating Libbie's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at Canton First Baptist Church with Reverend Court Greene and Reverend Walt Draughn officiating. Burial will follow at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12 noon until 1:45 p.m. at the church. The family wishes to acknowledge the compassionate care given to them by Care Angels and Hospice of Haywood County. Pallbearers will be: Tanner Stines, Zachary Stines, Will Stines, Sid Truesdale, Sam Burress, Stephen Churm, Rego Jones, and Jerry Powell. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Jerry Caldwell, Carroll Wright, Jack Shuler, Mike Pressley, Richard and Parker Reeves, Mike Harpe, Dick Rogers, Sam Decker, and Alvin Messer.
