Waynesville, Liston Edwin "Eddie" Gibson, age 72, passed away Friday, March 8, 2013 at his residence. He was a native of Georgetown, SC and had lived in Haywood County since 1976. Eddie was the son of the late Bennett Elijah and Edna Elliott Gibson and was also preceded in death by a son Rodney Edwin Gibson. Eddie by trade was a carpenter and was known as a "jack of all tradesman". His passion though was helping others and those in need. To fuel his passion, he was sent by his church, Francis Cove UMC as a missionary to Bolivia as part of a Native American team to work with Bolivian orphanages for 10 consecutive years. Throughout those 10 years, he saw many medical clinics built for the Bolivian people. The Bolivian people came to love Eddie as part of their family. Eddie will be remembered for his love of family and friends and his service to others and those in need. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Kay Smoak Gibson, two sons, Darrell Gibson and his wife Angela of Georgetown, SC and Timothy Gibson of Canton, NC; two sisters, Edna Mae Yates of Georgetown, SC and Wilma Reeves and her husband Bobby of Andrews, SC; one brother, Laverne Gibson and his wife Sue of Georgetown, SC; 5 grandchildren, Kaitlin, Stephen, Justin and Michaelyn Gibson and Elijah Gibson, beloved in-laws, many nieces and nephews and a host of special friends. The memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, March 11, 2013 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Terry Rowland officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 p.m. until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Prospect UMC , P.O. Box 384, Pembroke, NC 28372.
