Lizzie Jones

May 22, 1918 — March 10, 2010

Waynesville, Lizzie Mae Leatherwood Jones, age 91, of 128 Seven Springs Drive, passed away on Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at her home in Balsam surrounded by her loving family. A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Sam P. and Emma Jane Messer Leatherwood. Mrs. Jones was also preceded in death by her husband, John R. Jones and twin daughter, Dorothy Grant White. She is survived by her daughters, Doris Jones Williams, widow of CMSGt Ronald J. Williams of Perry, Georgia, Beverly Jones Madison and husband, James, of Grand Prairie, Texas; son, Johnny Jones and his wife, Betty, of Balsam; and a special granddaughter, Machelle Jones, of the home. She is also survived by a brother, Sam Leatherwood, Jr., of Bridgeton, New Jersey. Mrs. Jones has 13 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, 14 great-great grandchildren, and 1 great-great-great grandchild. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Saturday, March 13, 2010 from 10:00 until 11:00 a.m. at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville, with service following at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home chapel. Reverend Johnny Swanger will officiate. A private graveside service will be held at a later date. Honorary pallbearers will be Miss Lizzie's grandsons, Andy Williams of Pasadena, Maryland, Stephen Madison of Grand Prairie, Texas, David Jones of Charlotte, Chad Jones of Clyde, and Carl Grant, Jr., of Winston-Salem. A special memories service will follow the funeral service at the Balsam Mountain Inn, hosted by Kim and Sharon Shailer. Mrs. Jones worked at the inn for 47 years. The only time she wasn't employed there was when the inn was closed after being condemned in 1987, and it was closed for three years. She was very much a part of the inn and always had a special connection to the inn. The family would like to thank Drs. Thomas and Pascal and staff of 21st Century Oncology for their wonderful care.
