Lloyd Burns

April 28, 1923 — December 2, 2014

Lloyd Joseph Burns, age 91, passed away on Tuesday, December 2, 2014 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. A native of Canton for most of his life, he was the son of the late Manning T. and Laura Clontz Burns. He was also preceded in death by his brothers and sisters. Shortly after graduating from high school, Lloyd enlisted in the Army Air Corp and later assigned to the 8th AF, 392nd heavy bomb group based at Wendling, England where he and his crew flew bombing missions over Germany and occupied Europe. He was awarded the Air Medal with a cluster, the Purple Heart, a Presidential Unit Citation, the Prisoner of War Medal and other campaign medals and service ribbons. He also received "The Order of the Long Leaf Pine" from the Governor of North Carolina. After World War II, he continued to serve in the USAF Air Weather Service as a computer administrator and manager of data processing. After his retirement from the USAF, he was employed by RCA and General Electric Corp., contractors for the National Climatic Center/NOAA, for seven more years. Lloyd was a member of the Air Force Association, Blue Ridge Chapter of Western North Carolina, and was a member of the Canton Historical Commission. Lloyd was a longtime member of Canton First Baptist Church where he was chairman of the Building and Grounds committees. Lloyd is survived by a sister-in-law, Geneva Burns of Fairview; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his loving church family, and longtime friends, David Shropshire and his family and Greg Raxter and his family of Hendersonville, NC. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 6, 2014 at Canton First Baptist Church with the Reverend James Meadows officiating. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 10:45 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Burial will follow at Bon-A-Venture Cemetery, Old Clyde Road. Wells Funeral Home of Canton is in charge of arrangements. David and the family would like to gratefully thank the Home Bound Health Care from the VA Hospital for the professional ability and medical care. Thank you nurses and therapist, whom all became friends.
