Lois Turner

October 19, 1922 — September 7, 2014

Waynesville, Lois Irene "Shorty" Turner, age 92, passed away on Thursday, September 4, 2014 at The Homestead. A native of Jackson County, she was the daughter of the late John Lowery Gunter and Harriett Smathers Gunter. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Turner, who died in 1985, three sisters, seven brothers, and a stepdaughter and stepson. She was employed at Haywood County Hospital and Haywood Lodge as a housekeeper and was of the Baptist faith. Lois was a wonderful caretaker to many of her brothers and sisters and their children. She also enjoyed cooking, gardening, and canning. Lois is survived by a stepson, James Allen, of North Carolina; a sister, Velma Gaddis, of Waynesville; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 7, 2014 in the Waynesville Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Reverend Kent Lowdermilk officiating. Burial followed at Buchanan Cemetery. The family received friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home.
