Louis Holtzclaw

Louis Bryant "Buddy" Holtzclaw, Jr., retired, Lt. Col. USAF, passed away June 19, 2012, while in hospice care at the Charles George VA Medical Center, Asheville. Buddy was born on July 26, 1932, to Louis Bryant and Frances Robinson Holtzclaw. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Dolores Holtzclaw Furness. A 1950 graduate of Canton High School, he was valedictorian of his class and attended Georgia Institute of Technology where he earned a degree in architectural engineering. An avid supporter of his alma mater, he is a past president of the Western North Carolina Georgia Tech Club, a local chapter of the university's alumni association. He was a member of the Savannah Association of Flying National Guardsmen, VFW Post in Alpharetta, Georgia, and the Dixie Wing Association. At Georgia Tech, he was a member of the ROTC and upon graduation began a long military career with the US Air Force Reserve, retiring in 1983. Buddy lived in Atlanta for many years where he was in the construction and real estate industry. In the early 1990s he returned to Canton to live with and care for his ailing father and he worked as a real estate agent and part-time income tax-preparer in Haywood County. He is survived by his sister Mary Martha Fowler of Greenville; nephews Dave Fowler of Cape Carteret and Grover C (Skip) Fowler of Greenville; nieces Denise Fowler Haughn of Greenville; Lydia Furness Blagg of Alvin, TX; Martha Furness Youngblood of Katy, TX, and Carol Furness Fountain of Manvel, TX. A graveside service will be conducted at 12:00 noon on Saturday, June 23, 2012, at Crawford/Ray Memorial Gardens with the Reverend James A. Meadows officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the United States Air Force. The family will receive friends from 10:30 until 11:30 a.m. prior to the service at Wells Funeral Home of Canton. Flowers, in memory of "Buddy", are appreciated.
