"1922 - 2017"
Candler - On the morning of August 7, 2017 Lucille Lilly Lovin Payne went home to rest in the arms of her Lord. She was born August 31, 1922 in Yancey County to Cleta Mae Dodd and Elzie Nathaniel Lovin, who predeceased her. She was also predeceased by three brothers - Ernest, Alvin, and Paul - and is survived by one brother, Clint Vernon Lovin. Lucille was married in 1940 to J.B. Payne and together they raised their family on Morgan Cove Road in Candler until J.B.'s passing in 1984. Lucille is survived by her two precious sons Ralph and Dale and is holding her three treasures in Heaven today, Barbara, Carolyn, and Cleata. Lucille is also survived by six grandchildren - Robin, Rhonda, Jim, Tonya, Lori, and Eric; by ten great-grandchildren - Nathan, Natasha, Nicholette, Kaleb, Meghan, Brijette, Kira, Justin, Kassidy, and Lily; and by 6+ great-great-grandchildren - Hadden, Hailey, Lillabelle, Taylor, Shylah Rose, Harper, and Timber (on the way). She is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews whom she loved dearly.
Lucille made many friends and coaxed smiles out of numerous students during her many wonderful years of cafeteria service at Enka High School, a place from where she was proud to have retired. She was Mammaw, Mama, Granny, Lucy and friend to too many people to count. In her life, Lucille was accomplished in many things - gardening, cooking, sewing, quilting, mothering, studying scripture, serving others, and above all LOVING. Lucille lived life in relationships, loving on anyone she met, always happy to welcome them into her home and share anything she had with them. Above all, Lucille gloried in sharing her precious Savior with everyone who would listen. Her greatest desire has always been to tell of His love so that EVERYONE would end up in Heaven with her.
Lucille faithfully attended church her entire life. She spent the last two decades at Ridgeway Baptist Church serving in the WMU, assisting on various committees, and singing in the choir until her age limited her effective service in each role. Even in her later years, Lucille participated as often as possible and lovingly maintained her friendships at Ridgeway and beyond. She will be remembered by her Morgan Cove family as the "sweet lady" who opened house and yard each year to host the annual get-together, setting up shop to visit old friends and welcome newcomers for over 20 years. Her family will remember her as the matriarch who has loved us, prayed for us, and always wanted to "do right" by us. She has been the rock of our family and the glue that held us together for so long. As we say goodbye to our dear sweet Lucy, we celebrate her life and the love she showed each of us. We'll miss you every day, Mammaw - and we'll look forward to hugging you again in Heaven!
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 10, 2017 at Ridgeway Baptist Church with the Reverend Jack W. Collins officiating. Burial will follow at Pisgah View Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
