Lucille Smoak

Maggie Valley, Lucille Connelly Smoak, age 90, passed away on Monday, March 11, 2013. A native of Georgetown County, SC, she had resided in Haywood County since 1968. She was the daughter of the late Hugene and Florence Mae Reeves Connelly. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Wilbur Smoak, who died in 1993; four sisters, Justine Barnes, Minnie Richardson, Janie Elliott, Lula Mae Gainey; two brothers, Lewis and Thomas Connelly; and a grandson, Rodney Gibson. Lucille was a member of Maggie Valley First Baptist Church where she was a teacher for the Bethany Women's Class for many years. She also enjoyed her phone ministry and checking on church shut-ins. In the last years of her life, Lucille resided at the home of her youngest daughter, Deane, where she was lovely cared for by her family before going home to be with the Lord. She is survived by six daughters, Gail Dick (Odie) of Maggie Valley, Judy Newton (John) of Andrews, SC, Kay Gibson of Waynesville, Annette Denton of Lancaster, SC, Sarah Shuford (Leslie) of Clyde and Deane Smoak of Clyde; one son, Alan Smoak, Sr. (Veiva) of Georgetown, SC; 16 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren and 10 great great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 13, 2013 at First Baptist Church of Maggie Valley with Reverend Ricky Mason officiating. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons, Andy Newton, Craig Denton, Terry Ward, Alan Smoak, Jr., Gerritt Smoak, Mark Denton, Ray Owens and Zachary Ward. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
