Waynesville - Lucy Smathers Summerrow, age 95, passed away on Monday, October 22, 2012 in New Port Richey, Florida. Born in Canton, NC, she was the daughter of the late Jodie Burton Smathers and Minnie Tate. She was a native of Haywood County, where with her husband, Ralph Summerrow, they owned, operated and retired from Ralph's Cash Grocery, in Hazelwood, N.C. She was a member of Hazelwood Presbyterian Church, where she showed her endless love of children, in the nursery for 43 years. She is survived by two grandchildren, Carey Lee Boissy and her husband Eugene Jr. of Hudson, FL, James Kevin Slaughter and his wife Francie of Charlotte, NC, and three great-grandchildren Jordan Elizabeth Slaughter, Landry Richard Boissy and Lindsey Tate Boissy. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph Summerrow and by their daughter, Elizabeth Lee and son-in-law Phillip Wayne Slaughter; two sisters Mary Sue Sheffield and Francis Owen and two brothers Tom and James Carl "J.C." Smathers. She will be remembered for her special love of children, the special bond she had with her niece Ann, and her attentive devotion to her friends and family, including her mother, brothers, sisters, and grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 9, 2012 at Hazelwood Presbyterian Church with the Reverend Patrick Womack officiating. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. Family will receive friends at the church, one hour prior to services. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Hazelwood Presbyterian Church "Faith Promise Fund" or "Building Fund."
