Lura Mcelroy

Waynesville, Lura Mae Messer McElroy, age 90, passed away on Saturday, July 16, 2016 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Kaywood and Ida Mae Sutton Messer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Jerry William McElroy, who died in 1982; a son, Johnny McElroy; and a sister and two brothers. Lura Mae loved and enjoyed playing with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed gardening, sewing and watching over her chickens. She was a member of Liberty Baptist Church. Lura Mae is survived by three daughters, Patricia Rathbone of Clyde, Edna Teague (Jimmy) and Irene Franklin, of Waynesville; a son, Joe McElroy, also of Waynesville; ten grandchildren and several great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, July 18, 2016 at Liberty Baptist Church with Reverend Jerry Nelson and Reverend Gary Putnam officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Serving as pallbearers will be Tony Green, Bobby James, Michael Brown, David Burgess and Nathaniel and Joseph Carver. Honorary pallbearers will be Denny Jordan and Herbert Burchfield. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. prior to services at the church.
