Lura West

Asheville, Lura Mae Medford West, age 89, passed away on Tuesday, December 1, 2015, at Mission Hospital – St. Joseph Campus. A native of Haywood County, she was the daughter of the late Wesley Urby and Caddie Lee Warren Medford. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Roy Reeves West, who died in 2004; a son, Dennis Wesley West, who died in 1994; three sisters, Kate Smathers, Sybil Roberts and Rose Ellen Hames; and three brothers, Paul, Lane and Reverend Joe Medford. Lura was a volunteer for many years with Asheville Buncombe County Christian Ministry and was a member of Emma United Methodist Church. She is survived by a daughter, Phyllis Jones and her husband, Bobby, of Sanford; a son, Steven Waye West and his wife, Judy, of Waynesville; a daughter-in-law, Jessica West of Weaverville; three sisters, Maxine Liverman of Asheville, Louise Miller of Canton and Thelma Inman of Canton; two brothers, Calvin Medford of Clyde and Dalton Medford of Granite Falls; four grandsons, James, Matthew, Joey and Taylor West; and seven great-grandchildren, Brandon, Kyla, Jacob, Andrew, Katy, Charlotte and Wyatt. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 5, 2015 at the Canton Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with the Reverend George Davis officiating. Burial will follow at Grace United Methodist Church Cemetery in Leicester. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 1:45 p.m. prior to the service.
