Lyman Keener

March 4, 1923 — April 15, 2013

Waynesville, Lyman Hal Keener, age 90, passed away peacefully on Monday, April 15, 2013 at his residence with his wife, Mary, by his side. A native of Jackson County, he was the son of the late Abraham and Berdell Cope Keener and was also preceded in death by one sister, Dot Keener Butcher and three brothers, Cliff, Clyde, and Bob Keener. Lyman served with distinction during World War II as a T/ SGT with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division. He participated in battles at Normandy, Northern France, and the Ardennes. Awards and decorations included the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Combat Infantry Badge. Lyman was active in a number of civic organizations and was a member of the Masons. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Mary Ferguson Keener; three sisters, Peggy Johnson and her husband, Al, of Niceville, Florida, Barbara Keener of Buffalo, New York, and Brenda Galloway, of Waynesville; one brother, Jim Keener and his wife, Evelyn, of Waynesville; 54 nieces and nephews; and numerous great nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 18, 2013 in the Wells Chapel of Wells Funeral Home with Beuford Shirley and George Galloway eulogizing. Burial will follow at Green Hill Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by VFW Post 5202 and American Legion Post 47. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to VFW Post 5202, 216 Miller Street, Waynesville, NC 28786.
