Waynesville-M. E. "Gene" Howell, age 80 of 340 Golf Course Road, died Monday, July 3, 2006 at his residence. He was the son of the late Mark and Reta Stamey Howell. He was preceded in death by a Son Brett, a daughter Debbie, a sister, Betty Holcombe and a brother Don Howell. He retired as a Regional Director of Emergency Medical Services from the State of North Carolina in 1991 with 19 years of service. Gene was a member of Barberville Baptist Church and was a former Chief Deputy Sheriff. He was the first paramedic in Haywood County in 1970. He was a graduate of the Institute of Government; took continuing education courses at UNCA, Western Carolina University and Haywood Community College and had been an instructor at Haywood Community College. He was co-founder of Haywood County Rescue Squad, a member of the VFW and American Legion, former Haywood County Commissioner and on the board of Haywood Christian Ministry. Gene was a former board member of the United Way and the Board of Adjustment for the Town of Waynesville. He was a United States Army veteran serving in the Pacific during World War II. He is survived by his wife, Charlene Henson Howell, one daughter Jeanie Williams of Asheville, one son, Stacey Howell of Waynesville, two brothers, Jack and Gerald Howell both of Waynesville, 9 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, July 5, 2006 at Barberville Baptist Church. Reverend Johnny Foster, Reverend G. W. Jameson and Reverend Charles Magnet will officiate. Burial will follow at Garrett-Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at Wells Funeral Home of Waynesville.
