M. C. (CLINTON) NIX

Waynesville-Martin Clinton Nix, age 87, died Sunday, November 24, 2002 at Picture of Life Assisted Living Center in Toccoa, Georgia.

A native of Carrolton, Georgia, he had lived most his life in Haywood County. He was the son of the late Carl Agustus and Mattie Martin Nix. He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Roberts Nix, who died in 1990.

He was a graduate of Rabun Gap-Nacoochee, Rabun Gap, Georgia; Berea College, Berea, Kentucky; and NC State University. He served on the Haywood County School Board and was a member of the Haywood County Citizens Committee for Better Schools. He was appointed to begin the Haywood Industrial Education Center in 1965, later known as Haywood Technical Institute, and became its president in 1967. He was a member of the Joint Advisory Committee of UNC Community Colleges; a member of Central Committee of Community College Advisory Council of the NC State Board of Education; a member of the NC Association of Public Community Presidents, serving on the executive committee from 1976-1977, and numerous other committees including legislative; a member of the Advisory Committee to study the educational system of Jamaica and make recommendations to their Ministry of Education; a member and past district vice-president of AVA and NCVA; a member and past county president of NEA and NCEA. He was a US Army veteran and a member of Bethel United Methodist Church where he served as Sunday School Superintendent, and was a member of the Administrative Board, Finance Committee, and choir. He was a member of Sonoma Masonic Lodge No. 472 AF & AM, and was a charter member of the Pigeon Valley Lions Club where he served as president and zone chairman. He as also a member of the Board of Directors of First Union National Bank of Canton, and was a member of the Haywood County Chamber of Commerce.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia Craig Nix, of Toccoa, Georgia; a daughter, Barbara Jean Cathey, and her husband, Kenneth, of Lexington, Virginia; three sons, David Clinton Nix and his wife, Deborah, of Dalzell, SC, C. Michael Nix and his wife Claudia, of Asheville, NC, and Robert S. Nix and his wife, Deborah, of Greensboro, NC; two sisters, Mabel Beam of Cherryville, NC, and Myrtle Sanders of Lyons, GA; a brother, Dr. Victor Nix, of Athens, GA; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 27, 2002 at Bethel United Methodist Church with Reverend Arthur M. O'Neil, Jr. and grandsons, Reverend Andrew Nix and Mark Cathey officiating. Burial will follow in the Bethel Community Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 7:00-9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, November 26, 2002 at Wells Funeral Home in Waynesville.
