Mabel McCurry Barefoot, age 93, formerly of Newfound Street died Monday, April 11, 2005 at Silver Bluff Nursing Home. She was a native of Yancey County and had lived in Haywood County most of her life. She was a daughter of the late Issac and Roxana Bailey McCurry and wife of the late James W. "Jake" Barefoot who died in August, 2004. She was also preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters. She was a retired nurse from Champion International Paper with ten years of service. She was a member of Canton Central United Methodist Church where she was active in the United Methodist Women. Mabel volunteered with the blood mobile that used to frequent the YMCA in Canton and was a member of the American Nurses Association. She is survived by a son, Jim Barefoot and his wife, Linda of Candler; a brother, Ferril McCurry of Burnsville; two grandchildren, Julia Barefoot of Greensboro and Renee Barefoot of Candler and several nieces and nephews. Graveside services will be at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, April 17, 2005 at Pisgah View Memorial Park with the Reverend Carrol Lindsey and Reverend Thorton Hawkins officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the family cabin in Cruso. Wells Funeral Homes & Cremation Services of Canton is in charge of arrangements. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Canton Central United Methodist Church, 34 Church Street, Canton, NC 28716; Haywood Regional Medical Center, Hospice, Home Health Building, 560 Leroy George Drive, Clyde, NC 28721 or to American Red Cross, Asheville-Mountain Area Chapter, 100 Edgewood Road, Asheville, NC 28804.
